It’s often said that Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee, while Yemen is where it spent its childhood days. If that’s the case, then it definitely reached its maturity in India. Located in the Indian region of Karnataka, which now accounts for around 70% of the entire coffee produced in the country, Garigekhan Estate is certainly part of the rich, varied history of Indian coffee. The 2630-hectare farm was established by D. A. Graham, a man of British descent, who named it after the two tall red cedar trees (called Garige by the locals) that greeted him when he first stepped foot on the future coffee estate. In 1976, the land was purchased by Kelachandra Coffee Group, an Indian company that focuses on sustainable and responsible coffee production. The same group still owns the estate today, and it’s here that some of the finest Indian coffee varieties are nowadays grown.

The natural method used to process these beans has been adjusted and improved: ripe coffee cherries are first placed in sealed, temperature-controlled water tanks for 3 days and only afterwards left out to dry on special raised beds for around three weeks on average. Such an approach allows the cherries to ferment for longer and acquire more sweet notes before the drying process begins.

While this coffee is bound to turn out amazing regardless of how you brew it, the lighter roast profile makes it suited perfectly for filter coffee makers, French presses and Chemex brewers.
